This collection of VR shorts, part of Africa in Motion 2019, shows how new technologies can open up spaces for original voices and underrepresented narratives.

The films will screen in our VR lounge, which will be located at the Africa in Motion Digital Hub at Civic House in Glasgow from 1-3 November. The Hub celebrates and explores the power of the digital in the creative industries in Africa.

Films included:

Let This Be A Warning
Jim Chuchu | Kenya 2017 | 10m
A group of Africans have left the Earth to create a colony on a distant planet. They respond with disquiet to the arrival of an uninvited guest.

Azimuth
Nirma Madhoo | South Africa/Australia 2019 | 7m
Azimuth is in a non-narrative style of experimental fashion film that seeks to explore notions of a digital aesthetic, subverting the idea of stereotypical notions of African identities as ethnic ‘Other’.

The Other Dakar
Selly Raby Kane | Senegal, 2017 | 8m
A little girl receives a message and discovers the hidden face of Dakar. An homage to Senegalese mythology, this magical 360° film transports viewers to a place where past and future meet and where artists are the beating heart of the city.

Spirit Robot
Jonathan Dotse | Ghana 2017 | 9m
A VR documentary which explores the Chale Wote Street Art Festival in Accra.

Nairobi Berries
Ng’endo Mukii | Kenya 2017
In this poetic symphony, two women and a man wrangle in forests full of smoke and beneath waters dappled with bougainvillea. Each must hollow out the other’s core for fruits promised but only ever borne in dreams.
