Civic Street Open Day: Sept 3rd
The first Saturday of each month from May to September (7th May, 4th June, 2nd July, 6th August, 3rd September) marks a Civic Street Open Day – where Agile City and its partners Bike For Good and Glasgow Tool Library welcome our communities to get involved in workshops, events, talks, and collective making. Taking the Civic Street site as a commons and a resource to be shared, we ask you to get involved in activating the area through building, planting, growing, cooking and play. We will offer different levels of engagement through these hosted activities – allowing you to get as involved as you choose.
In return we will give you the time and space to learn new skills, connect with the site and meet new people. Through this process of cooperation with each other and the ecology of the street we hope to create a hub of collaboration, community and democratic exchange which will shape the development of the site into the future.

GTL Yard Sale at Civic Street Yard – Drop-in
10 AM to 1 PM
Come along to our third Yard Sale to browse through tools, clothes, furniture and handmade items all based around ‘Fix it Don’t Ditch it’ – cheap as chisels! Textile Banner Workshop with Glasgow University Stitch Society – GET YOUR TICKETS HERE
11 AM to 1 PM
Join our Fix it Don’t Ditch it Fun Day’s workshop focused around using textiles we would normally throw away to create a banner for the Glasgow Tool Library. Fashion is used to send a message out about ourselves and we want to use your old clothing for ours. We are working to collaboratively create a banner by sharing tools, skills and creating a banner that can be presented to our communities by using your old clothes. During this workshop you will learn design, hand sewing and sewing machine skills to collaboratively create a banner for the Glasgow Tool Library which says “Power Tools For the People”.
This workshop will be 2 hours long 11am – 1pm which will consist of creating the banner and learning or refreshing your sewing skills both by hand and with a sewing machine. Tickets will be at a sliding scale: Pay What You Can – £2-8. We are a not for profit organisation and any donations made will be to help support the Glasgow Tool Library’s tool maintenance.
This workshop is open to all ages however any person under 12 must also be accompanied with a ticketed guardian. Please bring all your colourful and patterned clothing to use for the creation of the banner.
Repairing Our Way to a Circular Economy with Andrew Curry – GET YOUR TICKETS HERE

Join Andrew Curry, the head of Maintenance Working Group at Glasgow Tool Library, in discussing the roles that repair and maintenance have in your personal life and how to use this to move towards a more circular economy. In today’s consumer world, mass manufacturing produces linear product lifecycles from virgin material to trash. The world needs a large shift towards more sustainable product habits and with it a greater sense of community. Reuse → Repair → Upcycle → Recycle.
In this workshop we discuss repair from its role in a circular economy to how to repair your own belongings that still have plenty of life left in them. For complete beginners to DIY pros, this workshop aims to be a space to learn from each other as a community. Other topics covered will include resource libraries, what is repairable, cleaning, gluing and replacing parts.
This interactive workshop will be 2 hours long 1:30-3:30pm which will help you to think about the importance of sustainable products and take away practical advice that you can use in your life. Free to attend.
Foraging for Seeds with Glasgow Seed Library and Hannah Brazil – GET YOUR TICKETS HERE

Wondering how to save seed from plants in the wild?
Join Hannah Brazil and Glasgow Seed Library on a walk and trundle around Civic House and along the Forth and Clyde Canal to explore our local urban ecology.
Together, we will discover the weeds and wildflowers flourishing and seeding, and discuss the role of plants in remediating and healing post-industrial landscapes.
Everyone is invited to create their own ‘civic seed mix’, and identify a space where they might be re-sown to restore soil and improve biodiversity.
We will also consider practical and ethical issues relating to collecting seeds, such as the spreading of “invasive” species, how to clean seeds and ensure they are pest-free, and best practice for storing and labelling.
Repair Café Glasgow – Drop-in
12 PM to 3 PM
Repair Café Glasgow was founded in 2017 on the principles of Repair Café International, and built upon the idea that our possessions have lots of life left in them when we maintain and repair them. Doing this together with others builds social cohesion and combats isolation, while helping reduce the size of our landfills.
Repair Cafés are a hands-on way to learn how this attitude fails both people and the planet and to take practical steps to do something about it. Repair Cafés are helping to change attitudes by presenting an innovative approach to waste reduction, social cohesion and the transference of craft skills, through the act of repairing, upgrading and maintaining a broad range of products. Items regularly brought to Repair Cafés include furniture, household electrical appliances, electronic gadgets and devices, toys, garden equipment, bicycles, clocks, jewellery, ceramics, clothes and textiles…and much more!
Repair Café Glasgow will be in the canteen from 12-3pm. Bring you items to get fixed up by our team.
Loose Parts Play Session with Hamish Orr from Baltic Street Adventure Playground- Drop-in
10 AM to 3.30 PM
Join Hamish from Baltic Street Adventure Playground who will be leading a loose parts play session building and creating our own playground on Civic Street using found materials, leftover bits and bobs and most importantly – pallets! This session will be drop-in all day at Civic Street, building as the day goes on. Not just for kids, adults are very welcome to come and explore how to reuse discarded objects and reinstate their right to play.
Hamish Orr is an Early Years Playworker at Baltic Street Adventure Playground, a child led adventure playground in Dalmarnock, Glasgow.
Film Screening with Glasgow Tool Library – GET YOUR TICKETS HERE
4 PM to 6 PM
Join us for a film screening focused on Challenging Consumerism in our everyday choices. “The True Cost” exposes the reality our shopping habits have on the Global South, the environment and workers. After a successful Fix it Don’t Ditch it Fun Day why not come along to our screening to see the real importance of using the circular economy in our everyday lives.
Free ticketed event with a meal provided in Civic House’s Venue Space.

Other Activities:
Civic Street Regeneration exhibition – have your say! Civic Street Play Area and catering by Sean Hussain of Good Stuff Glasgow. We also have a donation point for the Glasgow Baby Food Bank. The Bank is currently looking for SMA stage 1, Aptamil stage 1, and size 4/5/6 nappies. We will also have their bank information for transfers, each donation can take away a small bouquet of wild flowers from Civic Street green space.
