Coorie Doon February Party w/ Parveen’s

February 24th

Hope you’re all doing well in this new year and keeping warm in the walk-in freezer that Glasgow has been recently. We come bearing news of an incoming party celebrating one year of Coorie Doon at Civic House 🎈

Saturday 24 February 2024, 5pm to late

Kids welcome until 8pm (for free)

It’s now almost exactly a year since our first Coorie Doon, so it’s about time to head back to the dancefloor and celebrate our first time around. Thank you to everyone for making this party what it is, the dancers are the performance. We cannot wait to go on another cosmic journey of music and connection with you all!

Coorie Doon is a hi-fi dance party with a varied and global music policy, inspired by David Mancuso’s Loft party tradition and the unique dancing spirit of Glasgow. If you’re new to our party check out our website and social media for music, pics and words that delve a little deeper. Also do reach out to us with any questions at all, or if you’d like to be on our mailing list.

The Ethical City by The Glass-House Community Led Design

March 5th

Free but Ticketed – get tickets HERE

The Ethical City will explore the role of placemakers in addressing concerns facing the city, such as sustainability, inclusivity, social cohesion and community resources, and how the city facilitates and nurtures society.

With the ongoing threat of pandemics, artificial intelligence, food & energy insecurity, the Climate Emergency and political upheaval across the globe, we are asking the question: what does this mean for the current city and the future of cities?

Join The Glass-House CLD for this free co-design event in collaboration with Missing in Architecture and students and tutors from the Mackintosh School of Architecture, where we will explore these issues through discussion, debate and playful making activities.

Cultural Futures in the Crisis – Book Launch and Panel Discussion

March 12th

Join Justin O’Connor for a launch event for his forthcoming book ‘Culture is Not an Industry’, published by Manchester University Press.

Culture is at the heart to what it means to be human. But twenty-five years ago, the British government rebranded art and culture as ‘creative industries’, valued for their economic contribution, and set out to launch the UK as the creative workshop of a globalised world.

Where does that leave art and culture now? Facing exhausted workers and a lack of funding and vision, culture finds itself in the grip of accountancy firms, creativity gurus and Ted Talkers. At a time of sweeping geo-political turmoil, culture has been de-politicised, its radical energies reduced to factors of industrial production. This book is about what happens when an essential part of our democratic citizenship, fundamental to our human rights, is reduced to an industry.

Justin will be joined by Katrina Brown, Abigail Gilmore, and Robert Hollands to discuss the book and the role of culture in the future, particularly in the context of the climate crisis, and questions of cultural policy as we face a UK General Election in the near future. The panel discussion will be chaired by Mark Banks, with Kate Oakley chairing the book discussion.

EVENT RECAP AT CIVIC HOUSE:

The Civic House Statement by People’s Health Movement Scotland

In January we received a powerful statement from People’s Health Movement Scotland, born from an assembly coordinated by them at Civic House on 10th June 2023 and titled due to its location.

Since the assembly PHM Scotland and a range of partners have worked together to synthesise the issues raised on the day and produce a concise proposal. Their plan is to use it as part of a wider attempt to build both solidarity and concerted action across civil society in Scotland to create a viable alternative to ‘business as usual’ political inactivity and backsliding that has become the norm of UK and Scottish politics.

You can read more about the Civic House Statement and PHM Scotland on their website here and sign their pledge here. We are very proud to have been a location of the collective action which this statement acknowledges and proposes for the future of Scotland.
