Civic Street Open Day: May 7th

Date & Time
7 May 2022
Building

The first Saturday of each month from May to September (7th May, 4th June, 2nd July, 6th August, 3rd September) marks a Civic Street Open Day – where Agile City and its partners Bike For Good and Glasgow Tool Library welcome our communities to get involved in workshops, events, talks, and collective making.

Taking the Civic Street site as a commons and a resource to be shared, we ask you to get involved in activating the area through building, planting, growing, cooking and play. We will offer different levels of engagement through these hosted activities – allowing you to get as involved as you choose.

In return we will give you the time and space to learn new skills, connect with the site and meet new people. Through this process of cooperation with each other and the ecology of the street we hope to create a hub of collaboration, community and democratic exchange which will shape the development of the site into the future.

Here’s what we’ve all got up to at past Civic Street Open Days!

May 7th Activities

Introduction to Sourdough, Pasta & Cheese making with Sean Hussain saw attendees learn to make handmade sourdough, gnocchi and ricotta in a tactile and fun workshop with Good Stuff’s Sean Hussain. Working together as a team they prepared and cooked lunch for the other workshop participants, while gaining basic skills in artisanal Italian inspired cooking.

Wildlife Habitat Building with Matija Kraljić and Zoe Pearson created various habitats for the insects and wildlife of Civic Street, looking at the most simple ways to promote life and biodiversity in the area’s ecology.

Sounds of the Site with Tino Kellighan and Michaela Pointon saw attendees use found materials to make instruments which would capture and contribute to the soundscapes of Civic Street.

Tool BigFix with Glasgow Tool Library ran a volunteer tool ‘Big Fix’ with support from the Repair Cafe. Outside in Civic Street Yard a library working group of volunteers also sorted through tool donations ahead of their next yard sale.

Cycle Saturdays with Bike For Good held a range of workshops and lessons to suit any two-wheeled need – including DIY puncture repairing, learn to ride and confidence building lessons, a led bike ride, and e-cargo bike trials. There was even a chance to create your own refreshment using pedal power with B4G’s smoothie bike all day at Civic Street Yard!
