Agile City Newsletter – June/July 2025
Agile City Community!
Listen up! We’ve reached the solstice, ticked it off. It’s SUMMER and, if you haven’t already, I suggest you seize it.
We’ve been busy as ever up here at Agile City, here’s a quick recap of things done and things to come…
Upcoming Events:
Another People Place
Saturday 19th July, 8pm – late
Civic House, 26 Civic Street, Glasgow, G4 9RHAnother People Place is coming to Civic House — a new night from the Coorie Doon gang, shaped by deep roots in sound system culture, expressive freedom, and a love for soulful, diverse music. Taking inspiration from pioneering spaces like Chicago’s Muzic Box, New York’s Loft, and Glasgow’s own DIY traditions, Another People Place is grounded in the fundamentals: a great soundsystem, an open and welcoming atmosphere, and music that connects across generations and genres.
Guided by a deep admiration for Black American musical lineages and the forward-thinking spirit of institutions like Plastic People and Cosmic Slop, this new night at Civic House invites you into a space of freedom, expression and shared energy.
Come be part of the beginning.
Nourish Scotland
Sunday 20th July, 12:30pm – 03:30pm
Civic House, 26 Civic Street, Glasgow, G4 9RH
We have public hospitals, public libraries, even public WiFi. Why not public diners?
Public diners are state supported, affordable restaurants serving good meals to the general public. They used to operate in the UK under the banner of British/Civic Restaurants and they operate in numerous countries across the world today.
A group of local ‘citizen social scientists’ trained by the Citizen Science Academy at University College London have been carrying out some research about the history, purpose, and culture of public diners, focusing on the Polish Milk Bar (bar mleczny), engaging with the Polish community in and around Glasgow.
Join us for an afternoon of presentations, discussion and workshops aimed at learning what works about public diners in other cultures, and how they might be adapted here.
More information regarding tickets and timetabling can be found here.
Events Recap:
Time Based: SONIC INTERVENTIONS
Civic House welcomed two world premieres from Ukrainian and UK sound artists as part as part of the city-wide SONIC INTERVENTIONS festival, across two moving nights of experimental music and sound art.
Genevieve Murphy and Alice Haspyd started the festival with a kick, delivering a powerful collaboration of scottish folk and minimal noise that held the room in awe. Yuriy Seredin and Raymond MacDonald’s genre-blurring piece followed (pictured) – performed by an incredible lineup of musicians in what was an incredibly intimate performance, the score and evening was deeply emotive.
Endless gratitude to the artists for their boldness and their brilliance.
Human Rights Consortium Scotland – Migrants Workshop
We were honoured to have HRCS host their Migrants Rights Matter Workshop at Civic House, where representatives of migrant communities from across Scotland came together to explore what human rights mean in practice. The workshop was facilitated in contingence with Refugee Week.
From discussions around the rights to work, adequate housing, and education, to shared food and lived experiences, the workshop reminded us how vital it is to centre the voices of migrants in shaping rights-based change in Scotland. It was a fantastic event – people of over 14 different nationalities attended, all with unique lived experiences, and the Consortium are very grateful for their participants openness, ideas, questions, and support.
GRAMNet screening of TILKA for Refugee Festival 2025
GRAMNet (Glasgow Refugee, Asylum and Migration Research Network) was delighted to partner with Civic House last week for a screening of TILKA for Refugee Festival 2025. TILKA, directed by Myriam Geagea and produced by Seenaryo, is an intimate portrait of five women who meet to create an original play amid Lebanon’s economic collapse. The film weaves together each woman’s individual story with a collective narrative of displacement, motherhood and hope told through the play.
We were privileged to be joined online by Myriam and one of the play’s participants and Seenaryo freelancer, Fida, for a Q&A session following the screening, moderated by Migrant Women Press. This intimate discussion highlighted the courage and hope underpinning the play and underscored the importance of sharing stories rooted in love, creativity, and collective liberation, now more than ever.

News and Updates:
Farewell Parveen’s
The time has sadly come to bid farewell to our beloved canteen operator Parveen’s, who closed their Civic House doors to the public for the final time on Friday evening. A very exciting move to their own premises beckons; we can’t wait to see them installed.
Friday 20th saw a suitably jumping send-off with the final instalment of ‘Nights at Parveen’s’. The party was large and the queue larger; the canteen laid to a whole host of friends old and new in commemoration and celebration of 3 wonderful years to be cherished.Thank you and good luck to the Sharif sisters and the whole Parveen’s team – we are chuffed to have had you with us and we’re chuffed to see the next stage of your culinary masterplan set in motion.
We’re your biggest fans!
Plant Based Sarnies
Monday 28th July sees the return of Parveen’s mainstay Natasha’s Plant Based Sarnies pop-up in our Canteen. She’ll be serving up a plethora of delicious seasonal sandwiches and pies, and yup – all vegan!
We’re still reeling from her last pop-up in the winter, and dreaming of that Rhubarb pies sweet return… Not to be missed!
We’re still open for enquiries to establish a new partner for Civic House Canteen, taking over the daily food service and event catering at Civic House.
